After several frustrating weeks of cancellations, Wigtownshire’s 2nd XV finally got back out on the pitch at the fifth time of asking – and although the result went the way of visitors Isle of Arran, both sides enjoyed a cracking afternoon of grassroots rugby.

The Shire side, a strong mix of seasoned club men and enthusiastic returnees, were delighted simply to get a run-out in front of the home crowd. Despite the 19–46 scoreline, the match was full of entertaining rugby and end-to-end play, with plenty of smiles on and off the field.

Arran started sharply, showing good cohesion and running rugby to build an early lead. But Shire weren’t to be outdone – David Watson crossed for two well-taken tries, showing great pace and finishing ability, while Munro McConnell added another to keep the scoreboard ticking over for the home team.

Player of the Match went to Neil Irving, who led from the front with strong carries and a tireless defensive shift throughout.

While the result didn’t go their way, the day was all about getting the boots back on and enjoying rugby again. Wigtownshire’s social side continue to welcome new and returning players of all abilities – if you’re looking for a run around, a good laugh, and a post-match pint, there’s always a place for you at Shire.
