Boys Battle Hard Against Dalziel

Candice Docherty

Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart U16 Boys

Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart U16 boys travelled to Dalziel with a squad of just 15 players, knowing they would have to dig deep with no replacements available. Several boys took on unfamiliar positions, while Francis made his rugby debut in what was always going to be a challenging afternoon.

Despite having the wind in their favour in the first half, Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart found themselves 12–0 down early on. However, the boys showed good character to fight their way back into the game. A superb attacking move, starting deep inside their own 22, saw Lee cross the line to get Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart on the scoreboard. George added the conversion to bring the score to 12–7.

Dalziel responded to extend their lead to 19–7, but Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart refused to let their heads drop. Another try from Lee, followed by another successful conversion from George, brought the visitors right back into the contest at 19–14. The boys had worked hard to close the gap and went into half-time knowing they were still very much in the fight.

The second half proved a much tougher challenge. Facing the wind and with Dalziel able to bring on six replacements, Wigtownshire/Newton Stewart began to tire as the game wore on. With only 15 players available, there was little opportunity for a breather, and the physical demands began to take their toll.

Despite the growing fatigue, the boys continued to battle, showing determination and refusing to give up. They created further opportunities and had their chances, but unfortunately couldn't add to their first-half tally. Dalziel took advantage as the game progressed, eventually running out 54–14 winners.

There were plenty of positives to take from the performance. The boys showed resilience, adapted to unfamiliar positions and continued competing right to the final whistle, despite the difficult circumstances.

Man of the Match – Jurre Otten
Players player of the match - Jurre Otten

Jurre was outstanding throughout the game, taking every one of his lineout balls and making his presence felt all over the pitch. His work rate, commitment and willingness to get involved wherever he was needed made him a deserved Man of the Match.

Special mention also goes to Francis on making his first appearance for the team, while Lee contributed two tries and George kicked two successful conversions.

With just 15 players travelling, the boys can be proud of their effort and commitment. The final score didn't reflect the fight and determination shown, particularly in the first half. The challenge now is to build on the positives and come back stronger next time.
