Wigtownshire RFC travelled to Birkmyre on Saturday for an Arnold Clark West Regional League 2 clash that proved to be a real game of two halves. Despite a spirited display and some well-taken tries, Shire were edged out 31–26 after a late surge from the home side.
The first half saw standoff Neil Forsyth at the heart of Shire’s attacking play. Twice he spotted gaps in the Birkmyre defence and backed himself—first darting through from close range after a slick backline move, then later showing quick feet to step past two defenders and crash over under the posts. With one conversion missed, Shire led 14–12 at the break, holding the momentum but knowing Birkmyre remained dangerous.
The second half started in perfect fashion for the visitors. Captain Scott Forsyth led by example, bursting through a tackle and powering over the line to extend the advantage. Soon after, Angus McClymont finished a patient spell of pressure, picking a clever line off the ruck to touch down. With both tries converted, Shire stormed into a 14–26 lead and looked in control.
However, the final quarter belonged to Birkmyre. The hosts struck back with three quick tries, using their bench impact and strong running lines to turn the tide. Despite some brave last-ditch defence and determined carrying from Shire’s forwards, the home team’s late surge proved decisive, snatching a 31–26 victory at the final whistle.
Man of the Match was awarded to captain Scott Forsyth, who was tireless in both attack and defence, setting the tone for the team throughout.
Shire can take plenty of positives from their performance, particularly the quality of their tries and the commitment shown across the park. Attention now turns to the next fixture, as Wigtownshire welcome Mid Argyll at London Road in what promises to be another exciting contest.
