Shire Ladies Take Top Spot After Hard-Fought Win

Candice Docherty

Wigtownshire Ladies 20–10 Greenock Wanderers

London Road played host to a hugely anticipated top-of-the-table clash on Sunday as Wigtownshire Ladies welcomed Greenock Wanderers, with the visitors arriving knowing that a victory would keep them at the summit and the home side fully aware that a win would see them leapfrog their opponents and take top spot.

What followed was a fiercely contested and physical encounter which lived up to all the pre-match expectations, with both sides showing why they are challenging at the top end of the table.

From the opening whistle it was clear that neither team was prepared to give an inch. Both sides came out of the blocks with plenty of intensity, and there was an unmistakable edge to the contest as Greenock brought a physical challenge to London Road.

The opening exchanges were closely fought, with both teams looking for opportunities to gain territory and put pressure on the opposition defence. Wigtownshire gradually began to find their rhythm, however, and their pressure was eventually rewarded in the 23rd minute.

Niamh Wilson produced an excellent finish to cross for the opening try of the afternoon, giving Shire a deserved 5–0 advantage and providing the home supporters with plenty to cheer about.

Greenock Wanderers responded well to going behind and refused to allow the home side to build any momentum. The visitors soon found their way over the line themselves, bringing the score level at 5–5.

With neither side willing to surrender control, the remainder of the first half remained a tense and hard-fought affair. Both teams defended strongly and continued to battle for possession and territory, but neither could find another breakthrough before the interval.

At half-time, the scores remained locked at 5–5, setting up an intriguing second half.

The physical nature of the contest was already beginning to take its toll, with both teams forced into changes as injuries became a factor. Despite the disruption and the demanding nature of the game, the quality and intensity of the contest remained high, with both squads continuing to give everything.

Wigtownshire returned for the second half with renewed attacking intent and began to enjoy the better of the pressure.

The home side were rewarded when Niamh Wilson crossed for her second try of the afternoon, restoring Shire's lead and putting them 10–5 ahead.

The momentum was now firmly with the hosts and they continued to press Greenock back. Another period of sustained pressure eventually resulted in a further try, this time from Candice Docherty, extending the Wigtownshire advantage to 15–5.

With just a ten-point gap between the sides, however, nobody inside London Road was under any illusion that the contest was over.

Greenock responded exactly as expected, increasing the tempo and putting the Shire defence under considerable pressure. Their efforts were rewarded with another try, reducing the deficit to 15–10 and setting up a tense final period.

The pressure was beginning to tell on both sides, with nerves creeping into the game and small errors starting to appear. With the outcome still very much in the balance, composure was going to be crucial.

Wigtownshire regained their focus at exactly the right time.

The home side steadied themselves and began to work their way back into Greenock territory. Their persistence was eventually rewarded when Isla Campbell crossed for another crucial Shire try, extending the lead to 20–10.

Greenock were not finished and continued to throw everything they had at the home defence in the closing stages. The visitors searched desperately for a way back into the contest, but the Shire defensive effort stood firm.

Wave after wave of pressure was repelled, with the Wigtownshire players showing tremendous determination and discipline to prevent Greenock from finding the breakthrough they needed.

When the final whistle sounded, it was Wigtownshire Ladies 20–10 Greenock Wanderers, securing a hugely valuable bonus-point victory and, more importantly, moving Shire to the top of the table with a 100% win record.

It was a result built on collective effort, with every member of the squad stepping up when it mattered most in what was a demanding and physical afternoon of rugby.

There were, however, some particularly notable individual performances.

Amy McNeil was named Shire Player of the Match, an accolade thoroughly deserved after an excellent performance in the middle of an intensely competitive encounter.

Isla Campbell was named Back of the Match, producing an outstanding display despite playing out of her usual position. Her performance was capped by the important try which helped settle Shire's nerves and restore their ten-point advantage.

While those individual performances deserve recognition, this was ultimately a victory built around the entire squad. From the opening exchanges to the final whistle, the Shire players showed the commitment, resilience and togetherness required to come through a genuine top-of-the-table battle.

The victory gives Wigtownshire plenty of reason for optimism as they prepare for their next challenge.

There is little time to rest, however, with Shire Ladies heading north next weekend to face Highland in Inverness.

The match takes place on Saturday, 10 October, and after this impressive victory, the Wigtownshire squad will travel north full of confidence and determined to maintain their unbeaten start and continue their push at the top of the table.

For anyone fancying a trip to Inverness, the Shire Ladies would no doubt appreciate plenty of support as they look to keep this impressive run going.
