Ayr Ladies 17–54 Wigtownshire Ladies
Six-try birthday spectacular as Wigtownshire Ladies produce another outstanding away performance
Sunday, 20 September
Wigtownshire Ladies produced another hugely impressive performance on Sunday afternoon, travelling to face Ayr Ladies and returning home with a convincing 54–17 victory after an outstanding display of attacking rugby, physicality and, most importantly, relentless hard work.
From the opening whistle to the final play, Wigtownshire produced what can only be described as an absolute shift. The visitors worked tirelessly for the full 80 minutes, combining some excellent attacking rugby with a tremendous defensive effort to secure a comprehensive victory.
There were impressive performances throughout the Wigtownshire side, with the forwards laying a strong platform and the backs making the most of the opportunities created. The willingness of players to work for one another was evident throughout, with support runners continually arriving, tackles being made with real intent and the team maintaining its intensity regardless of the scoreboard.
At the centre of the performance was Niamh Wilson, who produced a birthday performance she is unlikely to forget.
Celebrating her 21st birthday, Wilson marked the occasion in spectacular fashion by crossing the whitewash an astonishing six times.
It was a remarkable attacking contribution, but her performance was about much more than simply her try tally.
Wilson was a constant threat whenever she had the ball, repeatedly finding space and making ground while keeping the Ayr defence under pressure. Her finishing was excellent, but equally impressive was her contribution when Wigtownshire were defending.
She put in some huge tackles throughout the afternoon and showed a level of physicality that belied her size. Rather than simply stopping opponents in their tracks, Wilson repeatedly drove them backwards in contact.
It was a complete performance from the 21-year-old and she was deservedly named Player of the Match.
Docherty's versatility shines
Another player to make a major contribution was Candice Docherty, who was named Forward of the Match.
Docherty once again demonstrated the versatility that makes her such a valuable member of the Wigtownshire squad.
A front-row player by trade, she showed that she is equally capable of making an impact when operating in wider areas of the pitch.
Her ability to carry the ball, make valuable metres and get involved in the action was evident throughout the contest. She was not afraid to take on defenders and repeatedly put herself in positions where she could help the team move forward.
There was even time for Docherty to show her attacking ability and get herself on the scoresheet.
From the front row to the wing, she proved that she can adapt to whatever role the team requires — and do it with plenty of enthusiasm and effectiveness.
Vance provides power and leadership
Amy Vance also produced a powerful performance and was recognised as Overall Player of the Match.
Operating at the back of the scrum, Vance provided an imposing presence throughout the match and was a constant source of momentum for Wigtownshire.
She made ground regularly with the ball in hand and caused Ayr problems whenever she was able to get into space.
Her defensive contribution was equally important, with Vance putting herself about and helping to maintain the intensity that characterised the Wigtownshire performance.
As well as her physical contribution, she provided valuable leadership within the pack and helped keep the team focused throughout the 80 minutes.
Wigtownshire's attacking threat
The final scoreline of 54–17 reflected Wigtownshire's ability to turn pressure into points.
The visitors continually looked to play positive rugby, moving the ball through the hands and taking opportunities when they presented themselves.
The six tries scored by Wilson were obviously a major feature of the afternoon, but the overall try-scoring contribution demonstrated that this was far from a one-player performance.
The Wigtownshire attack was supported by a pack that worked tirelessly to provide possession and front-foot ball, while the backs showed pace and creativity when opportunities opened up.
Just as importantly, the team continued to work hard defensively. Ayr were able to put points on the board, but Wigtownshire never allowed the home side to dictate the game for any prolonged period.
The visitors responded to periods of Ayr pressure with determination and repeatedly regained control.
A complete team performance
Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the afternoon was the consistency of the Wigtownshire performance.
There was no let-up in effort, with players continuing to chase, tackle, carry and support one another right through to the final whistle.
That willingness to work for the team is becoming a defining feature of this Wigtownshire Ladies side.
The 54–17 victory was built not only on attacking flair but also on hard work, physicality and a collective determination to maintain standards for the entire match.
For the coaching staff, there will undoubtedly have been plenty to be pleased with.
The individual performances of Wilson, Docherty and Vance rightly attracted the post-match awards, but the success was ultimately down to a full squad effort.
A birthday to remember
For Niamh Wilson, however, this will undoubtedly be a match that lives long in the memory.
Scoring six tries on your 21st birthday is quite some way to celebrate, and doing so as part of a convincing 54–17 victory made the occasion even more memorable.
Her performance combined attacking threat with defensive commitment and demonstrated why she was such a handful for Ayr throughout the afternoon.
Well-earned weekend off
Following another demanding 80 minutes, the Wigtownshire Ladies now have a well-earned weekend off before returning to training to prepare for their next major challenge.
They will return to action on Sunday, 4 October, when they welcome Greenock for a highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash.
After the performance in Ayr, the Wigtownshire squad will head into that fixture with plenty of confidence, but also knowing that another significant test awaits them.
For now, though, the players can enjoy the rewards of another outstanding team performance.
