Wigtownshire Overcome Sluggish Start to Secure Emphatic Playoff Victory in Inverness
Wigtownshire Rugby Club opened their Arnold Clark Regional Playoff Series campaign with a demanding away trip to Inverness to face Highland Rugby Club, in a repeat of last season’s National Shield fixture. While that previous encounter ended in a resounding victory for Shire, Saturday’s contest proved a far tougher examination, particularly in a challenging first half.
The long journey north appeared to have a noticeable effect on Wigtownshire, who started the match slowly and struggled to find their usual rhythm. Highland capitalised on this, dragging Shire into a physical, forward-dominated contest that suited the home side’s strengths. Time and again, Wigtownshire were drawn into battling through heavy traffic rather than playing with width and tempo, making the opening forty minutes a frustrating experience for the visitors.
Despite flashes of attacking quality, Shire found it difficult to impose their game plan and were forced to defend for long spells. Highland made the most of their opportunities, and at the interval it was the hosts who held a narrow 14–12 advantage, leaving Wigtownshire knowing a significant improvement was required.
That improvement came in emphatic fashion after the break. Following some stern words at half-time, Wigtownshire emerged with renewed intent, moving the ball with far greater accuracy and attacking the space that had gone largely unused in the first half. The tempo increased immediately, stretching the Highland defence and allowing Shire’s attacking threats to come to the fore.
The second half was a completely different contest. Wigtownshire produced an all-round dominant performance, building pressure through sustained phases and finishing clinically when chances arose. Tries came regularly as confidence grew, and the visitors eventually ran out convincing 69–28 winners.
The scoring reflected the attacking depth within the Shire squad. Niamh Wilson led the way with an outstanding four-try haul, while Sophie Mann crossed the line three times in an impressive all-action display. Kaylin Young added two tries, with Carla Campbell and Isla Campbell also getting on the scoresheet. Sophie Hall was near flawless from the tee, converting seven of the tries to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Despite the commanding final scoreline, the match was far from straightforward. Wigtownshire’s second-half dominance should not mask the sluggish opening, and against stronger opposition such a slow start could prove costly. It was a timely reminder that consistency across the full eighty minutes will be vital as the playoff campaign progresses.
There were several standout individual performances. A special mention goes to Amy Vance, who stepped up superbly to play over 40 minutes at prop and completely dominated the Highland front row. In her first season of senior rugby, this was a remarkable achievement and a testament to her rapid development and resilience.
Player of the Match honours in the backs went to Rhianna Bodle and Sophie Mann, both of whom delivered exceptional defensive performances. Their tireless work rate, constant tracking back and ability to shut down attacks under pressure played a key role in swinging momentum in Shire’s favour. In the forwards, Holly Murdoch was immense and deservedly claimed Forward of the Match. She led from the front with powerful carries, dominant tackles and relentless work at the breakdown, setting the physical tone and driving the team forward when it mattered most.
The victory provides Wigtownshire with an excellent start to the Regional Playoff Series, but tougher challenges lie ahead. Next up, they face Garioch, who may have finished bottom of the Premiership but will be no easy opponents. Shire will need to be sharper from the opening whistle when they meet on Sunday 8th February, with an earlier 1pm kick-off, as the playoff campaign continues to test their ambition and resolve.
