Ayr Ladies 14 – 54 Wigtownshire Ladies
Sunday 10th November 2025, Ayr RFC
Wigtownshire Ladies travelled to Ayr knowing that only a bonus-point win would keep their title challenge alive — and they delivered in emphatic style with a commanding 54–14 victory.
The opening 20 minutes were anything but comfortable for Shire, as Ayr dominated territory and possession, testing the visitors’ defensive structure. But Shire’s discipline and organisation held firm, repelling wave after wave of attack. When the breakthrough came, it was worth the wait — a dazzling break from Candice Docherty opened the door for Sophie Hall to score the opener and break the deadlock at 0–5.
From there, Shire began to shift gears. Carla Campbell crossed twice in quick succession, one converted by Hall, to stretch the lead to 0–17. Ayr hit back with a converted try of their own, but Sophie Mann responded immediately to make it 7–22 at the break.
The second half saw Shire’s attacking machine go into overdrive. Hannah Owen dived over early on, before Ayr found a lifeline with another converted try to make it 14–27. But there was no stopping the visitors’ momentum. A Sophie Hall penalty extended the lead, then Niamh Wilson bagged two quick tries — the first converted by Hall — before Carla Campbell completed her hat-trick. Kaylin Young added the final flourish, Hall’s conversion sealing a comprehensive 14–54 win.
It was another polished team performance from a Wigtownshire side whose structure and self-belief have grown exponentially under coaches McMaster and Irvine. Every player knew their role, the game plan was executed with precision, and the overall cohesion was a clear sign of a team firing on all cylinders.
Depth is now one of Shire’s greatest strengths — the bench is packed with players capableof starting in any team in the league, creating healthy competition and driving standards higher every week.
Back of the Match – Isla Campbell
A “silent assassin” on the wing, Isla was electric with every touch — calm, fearless, and devastatingly quick, she kept the Ayr defence constantly on edge. ?
Forward of the Match – Candice Docherty
A powerhouse performance. Outstanding defensively and lethal in attack, Candice’s explosive running left Ayr’s quickest players chasing shadows. ?
Opposition Player of the Match – Kaylin (Ayr)
Dangerous in possession and solid in defence, Kaylin was a standout for Ayr, working tirelessly and never giving up the fight. ??
With two weeks’ rest ahead, Shire will turn their focus to training before travelling to Bishopton on 30th November — confident, composed, and very much in control of their own destiny.
