Wigtownshire Ladies Battle to Win Against Ayr
Sunday 14th September – London Road
The Wigtownshire Ladies came out on top in a cracking match against Ayr on Sunday, edging a 35–24 win in front of the home crowd. These two sides have shared some great battles over the last few years, and with Ayr looking to settle the score after last season’s Shield semi-final defeat, this was always going to be a tough test.
Ayr struck first with an early try to take a 0–5 lead, but Shire didn’t panic and soon turned the game around. Carla Campbell was in unstoppable form, scoring twice in quick succession. Her first came after some strong build-up play, while her second was a moment of magic – collecting the ball deep in her own half and sprinting the length of the pitch to leave the Ayr defence standing still. Both were converted by Sophie Hall, who was faultless with the boot all afternoon.
The home pressure continued and soon after, Holly Murdoch powered through to score between the posts, with Sophie again adding the extras for 21–5. Ayr hit back with a converted try of their own, but Shire’s forwards responded brilliantly, grinding their way up the field before Niamh Wilson crashed over under the posts. Another Hall conversion made it 28–12, and crucially secured the bonus point.
Ayr, however, refused to go away and grabbed a score just before half time, meaning Shire led 28–17 at the break.
The second half was a real test of character. Ayr came out flying and pinned Shire back for long spells, with the home defence called on time and again. The improvement from last week was clear to see – the team held the ball up over the line four times and made tackle after tackle to keep Ayr out. Eventually, the visitors did break through to close the gap to 28–24, setting up a nervy finale.
With time running out, it looked like Ayr might snatch it, but then came the moment that sealed the game. Step forward Sophie Mann. In trademark style, she collected the ball inside her own half and sprinted the length of the field to touch down under the posts. Sophie Hall converted once more to make it 35–24, and the final whistle followed straight from the restart.
It was a hard-fought win, but one full of positives. Coach Allan McMaster had challenged the squad to improve their defence, and they delivered, showing huge determination under pressure.
There were standout performances across the pitch. Sophie Mann was deservedly named both Shire’s player of the match and Ayr’s choice for her control and composure throughout. Forward of the match went to Heather Nicol, who was immense with her tackling and aggressive play up front. Huge credit also to debutants Amy Vance and Rhianna Bodle, who were granted dispensation during the week – both played their part and looked right at home in senior rugby.
The Ladies now have a week off before returning to action on Sunday 5th October at London Road against Bishopton Ladies (2pm kick-off). Let’s hope for another big crowd to cheer the team on as they look to build on this fantastic result!
